All the Details on Netflix’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch Show

After the huge cult success of CW’s Riverdale and its incredible performance on Netflix, the streaming site has been at work on a spinoff based on the beloved Archie comics character Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. The show is currently rumored to be titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. While the character became well known thanks to the ABC live action series (which moved to WB in its final three seasons), this series will be based more off of the character’s comic book stories.

The show is reported to be a coming-of-age story, with Sabrina taking on evil forces that threaten the world (a la Supernatural set in high school). Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow) are executive producing the series for Netflix.

Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) is set to star as the titular heroine. Miranda Otto (24: Legacy) was cast as Sabrina’s Aunt Zelda, played by Beth Broderick in the ‘90s show. Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) will portray Sabrina’s Aunt Hilda, played by Caroline Rhea in the ‘90s show. Ross Lynch (Austin & Ally) has been cast as Sabrina’s love interest Harvey Kinkle, played by Nate Richert in the ‘90s series.

The biggest question mark in terms of casting still hanging in the air is that of Sabrina’s cat, Salem. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed Salem’s part in the series by releasing an image on his Instagram account, but nothing else has been confirmed past that. In the more recent comic book, also entitled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Salem was more of a voice of reason and a conscience for the heroine of the series. Whether he will be a more serious character or the comedic relief of the show as he was in the ABC/WB series remains to be seen.

As of now, Netflix has ordered two seasons of the show, with each season consisting of ten episodes. Filming is said to begin this week with a rumored 2018 release. There’s no word yet on how much overlap there will be with Riverdale. While the rumors say the show will air this year, it’s likely they will wait until the character can be introduced on Riverdale before sending her off on her own adventures. This may mean a 2019 release.
