The infamous Griswold family of the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise are heading to broadway! Deadline reports that producers Ken Davenport (Kinky Boots) and Kurt Deutsch (The Last Five Years) are working with Warner Brothers Theatre Venture to bring the comedy to the stage.
The play will be called Broadway Vacation and will feature the Girswolds on vacation in New York City. No other details have been revealed as of yet, but this continues a long string of musicals based on films. The past ten years or so have seen a major influx of films being adapted to the stage with major success. In the past ten years 16 plays based on films have been nominated for the Tony for Best Musical. That being said, only Once and Billy Elliot the Musical have taken home the Tony, and for every success there has been a failure.
Broadway is a difficult place to find success and unless you can create something truly magical on stage it’s hard to create a play based on a film that works. Will Broadway Vacation be the next Groundhog Day or the next Big Fish? Time will tell.
