In honor of Mother’s Day, were taking a look at 10 of our favorite fictional Moms from TV and Film. These are the women we’ve loved watching time and time again. Some of them haven’t always been the best mothers, but that just makes us love our moms more.
Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter – Arrested Develoment)
The Matriarch of the Bluth family, and the reason behind a lot of their turmoil, Lucille is one of the funniest Moms on TV. There are times that she seems to care about her children. But we love watching the ways in which she makes life difficult for them.
Helen Parr aka Elastigirl (Holly Hunter – The Incredibles)
Being a Superhero and being a Mom to three kids is difficult. But you can’t deny how much Helen Parr loves her kids. From making sure their daily lives run smoothly or protecting them from ballistic missiles, Helen proves that motherhood isn’t easy. But she manages to keep it all together and in the end is the real hero of the family.
Florida Evans (Esther Rolle – Good Times)
Good Times was a show that wasn’t afraid to take a look at some of the most difficult issues in life. And yet each episode it was Florida that helped keep us together. She was tough as nails. But she loved her children more than anything. She was the type of mom you want to have when things aren’t actually going so good.
Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham – Gilmore Girls)
For years we watched Lorelai Gilmore do her best to raise her daughter on her own. And while she wasn’t always perfect, she’s the epitome of a cool mom we’ve always wanted. Thank god Netflix brought her back into our lives. And with any luck we may see more of her soon.
Mrs. Gump (Sally Field – Forrest Gump)
Forrest Gump may have done a lot of amazing things. But none of those would have been possible if not for the way he was raised. We know she’s willing to do a lot for her son. But seeing the way she loved him and the love he shared for her is one of the best parts of this classic film.
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey – Game of Thrones)
Cersei may be one of the top characters we love to hate. But it should be abundantly clear that she will do anything for her children. The amount of blood that has been spilled on this show, simply because someone threatened or harmed her children, could probably fill an ocean. She may be an evil, horrible, conniving villain. But at her core, she does it all for her kids.
Ramonda (Angela Bassett – Black Panther)
The Queen of Wakanda. The mother of T’Challa, the Black Panther, and Shuri, quite possibly the smartest mind in the entire MCU. You don’t have two kids that turn out that amazing and kick ass unless you’re an amazing and kick ass mom yourself. Ramonda isn’t just the Queen of Wakanda, she’s the Queen of the world. And we love her just as much as her kids and all of Wakanda do.
Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad – The Cosby Show)
While there may be a dark cloud hanging over anything with Bill Cosby’s name on it, you can’t deny that Clair Huxtable was one of the greatest TV Moms ever created. She was a strong, powerful woman. One who supported her kids and her husband but also knew how to lay down the law when she needed to. She was, without a doubt, America’s Mom. And I’m inclined to believe that we’re all better people for having that character in our lives.
Morticia Addams (Carolyn Jones/Anjelica Huston – Addams Family)
Morticia is the mother that supports her kids no matter what. And it helps when she’s as “creepy and kooky” as they are. But her love for her kids, and her powerful persona as the Matriarch of the Addams family is one of the best aspects of their stories. We may like to see what the whole family is up to when we watch the tv shows and movies. But Morticia is without a doubt the best part of it all.
Beth Pearson (Susan Kelechi Watson – This Is Us)
Everyone talks about Randal and Sterling K. Brown’s performance on This Is Us. But every week we fall in love with Beth just as much. She’s quite possibly the best mom and wife on TV right now. She may be the Clair Huxtable for this generation. The mom that loves her kids to death, and constantly supports her husband, but knows when and how to reel them all in when necessary. The love and compassion she’s shown for her kids, her husband, ALL of his family, and for Deja, is nothing short of perfection and beauty. She doesn’t get nearly enough credit, but she’s one of the things that makes This Is Us such an amazing show. And we love her so much for it.
Happy Mother’s Day from all of us here at Poor Man’s Spoiler!
