The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has begun, and we’re going to be covering the new breaking out from the SDCC all weekend! The CW is bringing the well-loved supernatural Drama, Charmed, back to the small screen. This version introduces a new trio of sisters played by Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffrey and Madeleine Mantock, who work together after the death of their mother, to fight supernatural demons as The Charmed Ones.
The CW held a Panel for the show at this year’s SDCC, which included Producers Jennie Snyder Urman, Jessica O’Toole, and Amy Rardin as well as Diaz, Jeffrey, Mantock and actor Rupert Evans. During the panel, the cast and crew discussed what all makes their version of the show special, and previewed some footage from the upcoming reboot.
The biggest takeaway from the panel was that the cast and crew want to honor the original series. They commented on how iconic and important the original series was for featuring three female leads. How the original show was very much about “female empowerment, sisterhood, and strong women taking over the world.” Their hope is to continue that tradition with the new series.
Footage from the new series helped expand on the idea of this being a show based in feminism and female empowerment in the #metoo age. With the pilot focusing on a professor accused of sexual harassment, and the sisters receiving their powers when “the weakest of men attained the greatest of power.” A clear nod to Trump and the current administration in the White House, which brought cheers from the SDCC audience.
The show looks to be an exciting new take on a much loved property. One that we could definitely use today. Charmed premieres Sunday, October 14th, on The CW. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler throughout the weekend for more updates on everything coming out of SDCC 2018!
