The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con is in full swing and we’ve got all the big updates you want to hear about! Sony is working to expand their Spider-Man Universe with plans for multiple live action films featuring some supporting cast of the Spider-Man comics. The first of which is Venom, based on the much beloved villain/anti-hero. Tom Hardy leads the film, which co stars Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. Director Ruben Fleischer, Hardy, and Ahmed were on hand at SDCC for a panel on the film and we’ve got all the details.
The panel began with Fleischer explaining how excited he is for the film, and how fantastic Hardy and Ahmed are. Stating that their characters are “trying to bite everyone’s head off… and trying to take over the world” throughout the film. He also said that he wanted Hardy for the role because he always brings “complexity and depth” to every role. Hardy joked that he took the role because he loved the character, as did his son, so he took part in a film where the character is “[biting] people’s head off which [his] son can’t see.”
Ahmed described his character, Carlton Drake, as a genius billionaire and head of the “Life Foundation.” Drake believed the future is in space, and in his research discovers the symbiote. He also talked about Jenny Slate, explaining that she plays the lead scientist at the Life Foundation and “brings a lot heart and soul” to the character.
They showed some footage of the film during the panel which revealed Drake experimenting on humans with the symbiote. Those experiments are what lead Eddie Brock to become Venom. Eddie doesn’t know what’s happening to him at first and goes to a convenience store where he knows the woman behind the counter. She suggest meditation and he tries that, and taking pills, and ends up calling someone to say he’s sick. He passes out. Later he walks through an alley and sees Venom in his reflection in a car.
At one point Venom tells Eddie that his old life is over, Eddie states that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Eddie gets injured, with his body broken and twisted, and Venom repairs him. At one point a man is threatening the woman in the convenience store, and Venom attacks him and eats his face off. Eddie then emerges and says bye to the woman. There were also action clips, with other people using symbiote powers, and Venom turning his hands into axes and cutting through enemies.
Overall Venom seems to be exactly the type of film fans have been yearning for. There was some talk about the potential for Spider-Man and Venom to fight each other. While Spidey won’t appear in this film both Fleischer and Hardy said they hope to see the two square off.
Venom hits theaters on October 5th. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler as we continue to report on all the news coming out of SDCC 2018!
