SDCC: The Walking Dead Says Goodbye To Rick

The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con is in full swing and we’ve got all the big updates you want to hear about! At this year’s panel for The Walking Dead, we got our first glimpse of the 9th season of the hit zombie show, as well as some updates on what the new season will bring. Check out the new trailer below as well as some details on what we learned from the panel.

The panel officially confirmed that Andrew Lincoln, who portrays Rick Grimes, will be departing this season. Lincoln thanked the fans for their support over the years and stated that the character will always be a large part of who he was. “This has been the most extraordinary, amazing and beautiful experience of my career, made possibly largely by you guys. In this room and rooms across the world. And I just want to thank you…. What I wanted to say is my relationship with Mr. Grimes is far from over, and some part of me will always be machete wielding sheriff’s deputy from London, England. This will continue to be an ensemble show.”

As for details on the new season, there will be a time jump that will see the characters in a very different point. Maggie’s baby will have been born, and she has to come to terms with the fact that he child’s father is gone. But the man who killed him is still around. Daryl will be changed, thanks to his relationship with Rick and after years of “fight or flight” we’ll see a new version of the character. One that will presumably take a bigger lead upon Rick’s departure.

The new season will also bring back Negan, and see him in a place where he’s facing things both “internally and outwardly.” But still trying to cause some trouble. There will also be more exploration of the entire timeline of this world. With the panel stating they’re looking at the past, present and future of the universe. There will also be some new additions to the cast. Including Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Luke, and Zack McGowan (Agents of SHIELD) as a Savior. The new season will also see the addition of a few characters from the Comic including Earl, the blacksmith of Hilltop.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 7th. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler throughout the weekend for more updates on everything coming out of SDCC 2018!
