The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has come to a close but we still have TONS of news from the yearly event!
The hit CW show Arrow held a panel hosted by Ralph Garman at this year’s SDCC and revealed a new trailer for the upcoming season as well as some details on the upcoming season. The panel featured season 7 showrunner Beth Schwartz, and cast members Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Echo Kellum, Rick Gonzalez, Juliana Harkavy and Colton Haynes. Check out the trailer for the upcoming season below, followed by some details on the full panel.
Beth Schwartz takes over as showrunner this year, after being involved as a writer and producer since season 1. When asked if she is going to be changing things up, she admitted that she won’t be upsetting the structure of the show but she is excited to put her spin on it. Gonzales stated that a big part of this season will be focused on the team trying to figure out how to move forward with Oliver now in prison. How do they work to stop crime, without him leading the team, and how do they do so without getting thrown in jail themselves. Kellum and Harkavy expanded on that saying that Curtis will be working to find new ways to fight crime in the city beyond what they’ve done before. And Harkavy stated that one of the things she enjoys is being able to play the two sides of this, as a cop by day and a vigilante by night. She also said that we’ll see a bit more of the cop side this season.
Colton Haynes is returning to the show as Roy Harper this season. Haynes stated that the Roy we meet is slightly different after being away for a few years, and going through some things. He also stated that he’s incredibly excited to be back on the show and part of this team. The new season will also be introducing the villains known as the Longbow Hunters, Red Dart, Kodiak, and Silencer. The three assassins will work with Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo), as he seeks revenge on Oliver and Team Arrow. When asked about the introduction of Batwoman to the Arrow-verse in the upcoming crossover, Amell joked that the episode would just be a “44 minute conversation between Oliver and Batwoman in prison.”
Amell also stated that the Oliver we see in Season 7 will be a bit different. Besides the obvious note that he’s now in prison, he stated that Oliver does something at the beginning of the season which is completely reprehensible. They also confirmed what was teased in the trailer, which is that Oliver will be facing off against a lot of his previous foes whom he sent to prison while locked up. When asked about William’s role in the new season given that his dad has been locked up, Amell stated that his character has one of the best arcs of anyone at the beginning of the season. He also made comments about Oliver’s decision to turn himself in at the end of season 6, possibly being a really horrible idea, and him having to deal with all of that.
Diggle and Felicity will both be working to continue fighting Diaz and his crew, but will be working in very different places, and not exactly together as the season begins. The cast was asked how the role of fatherhood, which is a major theme on the show, will affect their characters this season. Amell stated that Oliver is his best self when he’s a dad, but with being in prison he obviously can’t be with William. Ramsey said that Dig and Lyla are probably two of the more well-adjusted people overall, and that finding the balance between home life and saving the world is a bit easier for them. Gonzalez said that so much of Rene is built on redemption, and the fact that he didn’t have his daughter for so many years. Now that he has her back and has kind of been redeemed it’ll be about building from there.
Last year at SDCC, a young cancer fighter named Sarah had asked Amell if he was doing another charity event for fighting Cancer. He stated he was doing another campaign and gave her an Arrow necklace he received from a friend, asking her to bring it back this year. This year the audience questions began with the return of Sarah. Amell said he’d take back the necklace, but that he had something for her. “I’ve only ever stolen one thing from the show.” He then grabbed the bow from the first season of the show and gave it to Sarah before whispering something to her. Presumably asking her to come back next year for another exchange. It was definitely one of the biggest highlights of the panel and of this year’s SDCC.
Arrow returns to the CW on Monday October 15th at 8pm. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler for more updates on all the big news to come out of SDCC 2018!
