The 2018 San Diego International Comic Con has come to a close but we still have TONS of news from the yearly event! As part of WB’s panels at this year’s SDCC they had a presentation on the upcoming sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Writers and Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord were joined by cast members Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Stephanie Beatriz. They showed some small footage from the film, and talked about the upcoming sequel. The film picks up five years after the first movie, and the invasion of the Duplo “aliens.” Bricksburg is now Apocalypseburg, a Mad Max inspired wasteland.
The cast talked about the influence of Lego on each of them a bit. Pratt said that being part of this film, and having his own Lego felt like being in the Hall of Fame. Banks told a story of how her dog went to the hospital when she was a kid because it ate a Lego piece, which led to some silly poop jokes. Beatriz explained that the scar on her forehead is actually from tripping over a lego structure she had in her room as a kid. She had it built in the middle of her bedroom, and would try to walk around it, and ended up tripping and cutting her head open.
The footage revealed at the panel opened on Apocalypseburg, where Lucy/Wyldstyle explains in narration, “everything is bleak”… except Emmet. He shows up behind Lucy at a coffee shop and seems like his normal enthusiastic self. Alarms begin blaring and aliens come in to attack, the citizens of Apocalypseburg head to the mines to hide, but one little star gets caught in the door and in the most adorable voice possible exclaims about the pain, saying it’s “so cold.” Emmet opens the door to save the star and the Alien leader comes in and kidnaps Lucy, flying off to space.
The footage continues with Emmet trying to put together a rescue mission for Lucy. A Margot Robbie Harley Quinn calls it a “suicide mission,” and everyone is against it. Emmet heads to space on his own to save Lucy and meets Rex Dangervest. A galaxy saving archeologist, cowboy, a seeming amalgam of Pratt’s other film characters. The two become “Vest Friends.” Then we meet Tiffany Haddish’s character, who at first appears as a bright and colorful horse. No one’s sure what she’s supposed to be so she turns into a giant creature with tentacles, to which Batman states, “the horse was much more palatable.”
Lord and Miller explained that the film goes into tackling the idea of these two imaginations, Finn and his sister, coming together in the same space. With her world being part of the “Sistar System.” It’s all about how these two imaginations combine. Pratt stated that it’s been weird to see this all play out because in a sense him and Emmet had the same path. Whereas Emmet started as a basic construction worker and was the hero by the end of the film. He was just Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation when he was cast in the first film, and by the end of making the film he was Star Lord, and a major movie star.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will hit theaters on February 9th. Keep following Poor Man’s Spoiler for more updates on all the big news to come out of SDCC 2018!
