Golden Rule: 25 Animated Films in the Race for Oscar Gold

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the Animated Films in the running for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Check it out below.

Part of the process for the Oscars is the shortlisting of different films in various categories. Overall, every film released over the course of a year can be nominated for an Oscar. It’s up to the studios, producers, and filmmakers to submit each film and it’s eligible categories to the Academy. It always starts with an extensive list that is then narrowed down be each Academy branch, until eventually we have our final list of nominees. Today we have our first look at the Animated Features in the running for the 91st Academy Awards.

The list below is mostly filled with titles you likely haven’t heard of. As with most years, there’s a decent amount of independent features and foreign entries. In the end a maximum of 5 films with get a final nomination, and be up for an Oscar on the big night. The most interesting aspect of the major names here is that most of them are all part of some sort of brand or franchise. Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and The Grinch are some of the leaders here, and none of them are truly original. There’s three sequels, a remake and the first chapter in what is sure to be a long running animated franchise. There is some serious potential for Smallfoot and Isle of Dogs, but Smallfoot seemed to show up and disappear at the box office, and Dogs has a bit of a cloud hanging over it after some controversy over cultural appropriation.

We’ll see how things continue moving forward in the coming months. And there’s a good chance that we’ll have a better picture of how this race may lean when the Annie Awards nominations are announced on December 3rd, and when the 46th annual Annie Awards take place on February 2nd. The Annie’s, given out each year by ASIF-Hollywood (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation), are awarded to the best in animation for each year, and there tends to be a bit of an overlap for nominations.

For now though here’s the list of 25 films in the running for Best Animated Feature at the  91st Academy Awards.
