91st Oscar Blast: Best Director

Tonight is the 91st Annual Academy Awards! And all day today we’ll be bringing you a rundown of each category as well as reviews of the nominated films. Next up, Best Director.

Best Director

The Best Director category is rather straight forward. The award is given to the Director that the Academy believes, did the best job in their field this year. This year the nominees are, Alfonso Cuarón (Roma), Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman), Adam McKay (Vice) Pawet Pawlikowski (Cold War).

The front runner here has always been Alfonso Cuarón, and it makes sense. Cuarón was able to craft a beautiful black and white film, set in Mexico, in the 1970’s, and every bit of it feels real. Every shot is a beautiful image into this world Cuarón has created. His ability to bring out phenomenal, realistic performances from actors while also delivering one of the most aesthetically pleasing films in recent memory makes it award worthy. There’s a slight chance Spike Lee could take it away from Cuarón, as BlacKkKlansman is without a doubt a cinematic masterpiece, that is fitting for the way of the world today. But this is Cuarón’s to lose.

So as of now our final say is:

Best Director: Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
