Captain Marvel: Exploring the MCU in the 90’s

The latest MCU film, Captain Marvel, is a prequel to the entire MCU this far. So where does that put us?

This weekend sees the release of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. The film is a prequel to the more recent films set in 1995. We’ve seen a lot of flashbacks to years past, but what takes place before Captain Marvel, and what does the MCU look like at that time? We’re gonna take a look at that today. (SPOILERS for a lot of the MCU films ahead.)

On the cosmic side of the MCU, the nine realms are at peace thanks to the work of Odin. Thor and Loki are living on Asgard with their parents. Peter Quill is living and working with Yondu and the Ravagers, not knowing the truth of his parentage. The Kree and Nova Empires are nearing the end of a thousand-year war. Red Skull is on the planet Vormir, having been transported there by the tesseract aka the Space Infinity Stone.

On Earth, Captain America is frozen within the Hydra bomber, Valkyrie, off the coast of Greenland. Tony Stark has just lost his parents after their murder at the hands of the Winter Soldier. Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff are living ordinary lives. Hydra has secretly infiltrated SHIELD. Hank Pym has left the covert agency after the apparent death of his wife. And the king of Wakanda, T’Chaka has just returned home after killing his brother while questioning him over his involvement in Ulysses Klaue’s theft of Vibranium.

The MCU is in an interesting time. It’s a point where a lot of groundwork has been laid, and many important people are close to life-changing events. In many ways, it’s a dark time, a time where horrible things lurk in the shadows. But things may be close to changing, as Carol Danvers is about to enter the MCU in a big way.

Check out the full pre 1995 timeline of major events below, and be sure to keep following us for all of our Captain Marvel coverage. Captain Marvel hits theatres Friday, March 8th.
