Skrulls: Their Future in the MCU

The Skrulls are officially part of the MCU, and we likely haven’t seen the last of them.

After over 20 films the MCU has finally introduced the infamous villains known as the Skrulls in Captain Marvel. We did a full rundown of the shape shifting aliens comics background in our Skrulls 101 article. For now we’re going to look at where Captain Marvel leaves the characters, and what the end of the film may mean for their future. Beware, as we’re going to dive into some MAJOR SPOILERS.

Captain Marvel

Perhaps the biggest twist in Captain Marvel is the fact that the Skrulls aren’t the real villains of the film, and that the Kree have been the true destructive force. The film takes this turn about halfway through, and as surprising as it is, the foundation for this turn had been established previously in the MCU. We know that the Kree were essentially the villains of the Kree-Nova war which ended before the start of Guardians of the Galaxy. They also seem to not care about the destruction Ronan is causing during that film.

Having that background knowledge, should have been a hint to the truth of Captain Marvel, but we fall in line with Carol Danvers or Vers, as her journey begins. Given that her journey in this film ends with her guiding the Skrulls to safety, we have to expect that they may play further into her story or the cosmic elements of the MCU. It’s also unlikely that their role on Earth is done, and if anything the film sets things up for them to return in full form, especially Talos.

Talos

The end of Captain Marvel also establishes that Talos is driven by his desire to save his people and his family. Everything that happens at the end of the film helps clue us in to where his path is headed. We know that he would go to any lengths to keep his family and people safe, and is willing to manipulate, torture, and kill of necessary. While it’s easy to overlook it in the film because as he comments, it’s part of war, those are still things we know he’s capable of.

All the MCU would need to do is kill his family, and Talos could easily become the destructive force of nature we’ve seen him as in the comics. The film also sets up a MAJOR aspect of his character in the comics with him being shot as they make their escape. The comic book version of the character is unable to shape-shift, and as such has had to use other means to help enact his plans. If Talos can no longer shape-shift due to his injury, this could redefine his character moving forward. Even more so if it’s part of what destroys his family.

Overall Marvel, and the team behind Captain Marvel, have set things up perfectly to turn Talos and the Skrulls into interesting and compelling villains that are more than just shape-shifting aliens. In a way they could become the sort of Loki of the MCU moving forward. Villains who keep popping up and causing trouble for the heroes, until there’s an eventual big league battle against the Avengers. Given their vast history in the Marvel comics, we can only hope that Marvel follows through, because the Skrulls definitely deserve the full evil treatment on the big screen.

For now, you can catch the first MCU appearance of the Skrulls in Captain Marvel, which is currently playing in theaters. Be sure to continue following Poor Man’s Spoiler for all of our coverage of the film, and don’t forget to check out our previous articles at the links below.
