Golden Rule: How The Golden Globes May Have Helped Oscar Hopefuls

After the 75th Annual Golden Globes on January 7th, there’s been a swell of talk about the Oscar race. The Golden Globes don’t have a direct effect on the Oscars. The Hollywood Foreign Press, a group of journalists and photographers who aren’t part of any Hollywood Guilds, nor are they members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that awards Oscars, chooses them. 75th Annual Golden Globes Recap: Time’s Up

Last Night the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded the 75th Annual Golden Globes. The ceremony is often times criticized for not meaning much, between some awkward choices for nominations (Get Out is not a comedy), criticism for snubs (including, as Natalie Portman said, the “all male nominees” for Best Director), or the fact that the HFPA doesn’t have a hand in any other awards, it usually feels like just a big party that fans get to watch. 75th Annual Golden Globes Nominees

Tonight brings the 75th Annual Golden Globes, and this year’s ceremony is sure to be interesting. The Golden Globes are given out annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and mark achievement in Film and Television. It’s one of the few times where stars from both sides of the Entertainment world come together, and the ceremony itself features a dinner and drinks, which can sometimes lead to some rather interesting moments. This year features a lot of first time nominees, and the HFPA will often award a Golden Globe to a newer nominee. Overall this is one of the few Awards that don’t have much influence over other Awards as no one involved in nominating or voting for a winner for a Globe (re: anyone in the HFPA) has any part in any of the guilds or Academies. That being said, sometimes a good presentation to the public and their peers can help push someone who may have been an underdog in a race.
